Daddy's Pride / Driving
Nov 07, 2012
A couple of weeks ago our son transitioned to the car seat you see above. He now has a clear view of the road, and is officially a backseat driver. He watches every move I make. I now have to be extra careful to not making any mistakes while driving because he might just go and tell mommy. :) Also, studies say that kids at his age begin to imitate their parents. I know he has many years until he starts driving, but I better start being more disciplined to having both hands on the wheel.

I was never one for speeding, however I have never been what you would call a slow or “granny” driver. Now that I have the little guy in the back seat, you will find me being more cautious, and in the slow lane which is only natural. The day I took my son home from the hospital I was extra careful, meaning the roads had to be completely clear for me to drive on them. One would probably think I was a nervous old man who’s reaction time was dwindling. At the intersection I let everyone go ahead of me first regardless of the traffic that I was building behind me. You can never be too careful. Since he was born we have had a few outings. Every time I get behind the wheel I have a sudden desire to go to Babies “R” Us, and purchase those bumper stickers that I made fun of prior to my son’s existence. I am talking about those “baby on board” stickers. I might just have to put that decal on the back of my first love (car).

The other day I was driving my SUV which now has a baby car seat installed. The seat is rear facing, so if my child is tall enough he will get to look out of the back window rather than staring at the seat. While driving I began thinking about his curiosity. I am sure he will wonder about all the simple objects that are around him like the car window, windshield wipers, seat belt, cotton/leather fabric, and etc. This thought led me to start imagining our future interactions. I will get to teach him all the stuff that is around us. I will show and explain things the best I can. I am sure he will absorb the information because I have been told that kids are like sponges. Hopefully, he will like daddy’s lectures!

I have had my car for 12 years now, and I have to admit it’s still pretty clean. Hopefully the little devil won’t ruin my first love.
